Latest News from the NSW Coaching Director

Lots of reminders from the Branch Coaching Director:

There are currently two levels of coaching – Intro Coach and Club Coach and a heavy component of online learning. Also the Coaching Masters Swimming course is available for those with current Swimming Australia Ltd (SAL) accreditation. Details are available on the coaching tab of the National website.

MSNSW conducted two Intro Coach courses in 2012. The first was held on 28 April 2012 at Terrey Hills in Sydney with seven participants. Congratulations to Misa Nakata from North Sydney, Rachel Ireland from Seaside Pirates, Sue & Peter Myers, Michael Moroney all from Warringah Masters for completing all requirements from the first Intro Coach course.

The second Intro Coach course was run it Yamba in June with six participants.

Thanks to John Kulhan for his valuable assistance with these courses.

On Sunday, 10 February 2013 the third Intro Coach course will be held at Lakeside Leisure Centre in Canberra.

As a prerequisite to the Intro coach course you need to enrol in the free ASC Beginning General Coaching Principles (BGCP) course, complete the course and print your certificate.

On Sunday 10 March 2013 we plan to conduct a Club Coach course to follow on from the Intro Coach course (venue TBA).

As a prerequisite to the Club Coach course you need to have completed all requirements of the Intro Coach course and complete an correspondence course in the Intermediate General Coaching Principles (IGPC). This course is available from NSW Sport and Recreation (Cost $200) and you can enrol by phoning 13 13 02 or download the enrolment form.

If you wish to attend any of these courses please download, complete and submit the Registration Form with payment to the branch.

The branch will confirm receipt of your application and entry into the course. You will receive a course pack containing further details including pre-course preparation materials.

Bring your completed BGCP or IGCP course certificate and course materials to your course.

Congratulations to recently reaccredited coaches: Catherine Rogers and Vasilli Efimov from Wett Ones and Nick Woodhams and Marion Harrison from Warringah Masters. All current Level 1M coaches will be reaccredited at the Club Coach level. Please be aware of the expiry date of your accreditation and send in your updating documents, a copy of your current CPR with the signed Coaches Code of Behaviour to the Branch Office. All these documents are available on the National website below.

All coaches are directed to the next edition of our MSNSW newsletter Splash-e which will outline problems when breaststroke swimmers (including in the IM) do two consecutive arm strokes at the end of the pool at the turn or finish. Coaches should remind swimmers of the rule that breaststroke is swum as a cycle of one arm stroke to one leg kick. See rule SW7. This is a timely reminder that turns and finishes should be practised in training. This is particularly relevant in the finish as the session must be organised so that swimmers can practice correct finishing techniques and not have squad members milling about at the end of the pool preventing correct finishes.

A review of 2012 swim meet DQs has indicated that compliance has been quite high with the above problem and also backstroke turns in both backstroke events and the IM. Some false starts have been noted also so coaches are doing a great job but need to focus on these areas in training.
